Save Haiti Tri-County Bike Roundup
:
A call to action

The Haitian Diaspora mobilizes for Haiti. Local officials, nonprofit organizations, student organizations, and volunteers all throughout South Florida are meeting up to commemorate the 1st anniversary of the earthquake tragedy and to garner support for Haiti.

January 12, 2011 will mark the anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Haiti that took more than 300,000 lives and left the country in rubbles. On that day, Salusa Basquin, educator, radio host, poet, DJ and long time member of the Haitian Community in South Florida, will be doing a Tri-County bike roundup for manpower to help rebuild Haiti.

His biking tour will begin at 5:30AM in the city of Lake Park with a prayer and a word from the Mayor. He will bike to the City Hall in Riviera Beach. There he will meet up with supporters from the community and Mayor Thomas Masters. Thereafter, he will head to the office of Haitian American State Representative Mack Bernard for a symbolic reading of 112 names of victims from the earthquake. The names are from www.112haiti.com, a digital memorial wall created after the earthquake to honor the dead. Salusa will then bike to the County Commission Office and the City Hall of West Palm to meet with City Mayor Lois Frankel. His next stop will be in the City Hall of Lake Worth where city officials, members and leaders
of the community, and 112 spiritual leaders for a special prayer for Haiti will meet him.

Salusa’s last City Hall stop will be in Delray Beach to meet and hear the wishes of a student spokesperson on behalf of Haiti. 112 students will be waiting for Salusa. He will then continue his journey South to Broward County via Dixie Highway to Jaco Pastorious Park to meet with Broward Commissioner Dale Holeness and other elected officials for a word of encouragement. The final destination is Little Haiti at the Little Haiti Park, where he will be met by 112 community leaders including life-long activist Marlene Bastien and the president of the Haitian Lawyers Association Richard Champagne.

Our South Florida community was left bewildered after the devastation of January 12 but now we mobilize to build back better.

“I believe there is a role for everyone who wishes to contribute to a better Haiti”, Mack Bernard.
